PSS GUIDELINES, 18 March 2011       4 April.
2ND YEAR ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY COURSE AT CPUT
Some of the best learning can happen in active reflection on your own work. You will therefore not just fill in you ATR logsheet and place drawings in your portfolio, but you will actively reflect on the work that you did. By now you have hopefully settled in at the workplace and able to get going with the preparation of your portfolio of work.

You have to fill in the accompanying sheet for PSS. It is similar to your ATR logsheet, but more detailed. You must create an online portfolio using carbonmade, yolasite or something similar (google to find). Provide a link to this online portfolio, on your blog. This sheet must be filled in and presented as the first page in your portfolio.
In addition to the updated online portfolio, all work must be submitted on CD/ DVD at the start of block 3. To save trees, we do not require an A3 hard copy, unless you have legitimate problems with your online portfolio.
During the rest of the year, the online portfolio will be evaluated at the following dates, which implies that you must keep your portfolio updated.

Review dates:

  • 4 April – updated online portfolio
  • 10 June – updated online portfolio
  • 8 August – updated online portfolio
  • 24 October - updated online portfolio and submit CD/DVD

Questions to be answered with each drawing in the portfolio:

The following questions are guidelines for reflection, you may add or alter as necessary to convey the appropriate information. This must be done for each drawing and/or page that you put in your portfolio. This implies that you have to insert this page after each drawing, or create an index that references your reflection and make it easy to access. You may decide how you wish to present it.

1.    What is the purpose of this drawing/information?
2.    Who are the people for whom you have prepared this drawing/information?
3.    Are there any other ways to provide the same drawing/information?
4.    Explain the purpose of every component of the drawing/information mean (for example, why do you put certain dimensions on a specific drawing?)

Additional general questions to be answered:

In addition, a different set of GENERAL questions will be posed for every interim review submission. Here follows the first list (other questions will follow prior to every review date):

1.    How does the project and drawing reference system work in your office? Explain this diagrammatically.
2.    How does your office find work on a sustainable basis?
3.    Analyse your office environment
a.    How many people work there?
b.    What are their respective responsibilities?
c.    How does the communication work in the office – who reports to whom etc?
d.    How are new projects tackled – who gets involved in which stages of the project?

All announcements and information specifically related to PSS will be posted here.

Remember, for this subject you must keep record of your work in the office, and reflect (think about) your learning. One way of doing this, will be your weekly blogs. But you will also be asked to write a report from time to time (perhaps as a test in the next block:-) and also include that information on CD/DVD in a systematic, clear and legible manner.

Weekly blogging
Next deadline: every Friday
Reflect on your learning in the office.
